Unofficial Guide to Traffic Council > Stop Signs

You want to slow traffic to keep, especially at intersections, put up a stop sign, right?

Not so fast [pun intended].

Stop signs work where they make sense to control traffic. On a minor road joining a major road, but not on the major road, and not at all minor roads. At the intersection of major roads. Not on through roads.

When you put a stop sign where it doesn't make sense for traffic, traffic ignores the stop sign. And, that can result in more problems. Pedestrians and other motorists get a false confidence that all traffic will stop.

Multi-way Stop Signs must meet the warrant criteria as outlined in Section 2B.07 of the 2003 MUTCD.
